New Graduate Work Visa Options Coming to New Zealand (Late 2026)
Immigration New Zealand has announced upcoming changes to graduate work visa options aimed at better connecting international graduates with New Zealand’s labour market and skill shortages.
These changes introduce a Short Term Graduate Work Visa and broaden eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa, helping create clearer pathways from study to employment.
Short Term Graduate Work Visa (Expected Late 2026)
International graduates who are not eligible for a Post Study Work Visa may be able to apply for a 6-month open work visa to help them transition from study into employment and potentially move onto an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).
Key features:
Open work rights for up to 6 months
Application must be made within 3 months of student visa expiry
Must hold an NZQCF Level 5–7 qualification with at least 24 weeks of study in New Zealand
Must show minimum maintenance funds of NZD $5,000
Important limitations:
Partners or dependent children cannot be supported under this visa
No extensions or second Short Term Graduate Work Visa will be available
This visa is intended to give graduates additional time to find skilled employment in New Zealand.
Post Study Work Visa – Expanded Eligibility
From late 2026, graduates who complete a Graduate Diploma (NZQCF Level 7) may become eligible for a Post Study Work Visa, provided they also hold a Bachelor’s degree (from New Zealand or overseas).
Key points:
Study must be completed full-time in New Zealand
Visa duration may be up to 1 year
Visa holders may support partner and dependent child visas if eligibility requirements are met
Only one Post Study Work Visa can be granted in a lifetime

These updates are designed to attract skilled international graduates and better support their transition into New Zealand’s workforce while maintaining the quality of the country’s education system.
Immigration policies can be complex and individual circumstances such as qualification level, visa history, and timing can affect eligibility.
