Update: Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Changes – Coming into Effect Late August 2026
Immigration New Zealand has released additional information about upcoming changes to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC). These updates are designed to help employers retain skilled workers and support New Zealand’s long-term economic growth.
Here is a brief overview of the key changes:
Trades & Technician Pathway Confirmed
Applies to ANZSCO Skill Level 1–3 trades and technician roles
Requires a Level 4 or higher qualification
Minimum 4 years of relevant post-qualification work experience
At least 1.5 years of work experience in New Zealand earning the SMC median wage
This pathway provides a clearer residence option for skilled tradespeople who previously had limited opportunities.
Introduction of Red & Amber Lists
These lists will help manage immigration risks while ensuring residence pathways target genuine skill shortages.
Red List
Applicants on this list will not be eligible for the two new pathways and must qualify under the existing SMC requirements, such as:
• 6-point system
• Earning 1.5 times the median wage
• Bachelor’s degree (Level 7+) or recognised professional registration.
Amber List
Applicants may qualify under the Skilled Work Experience pathway, provided they meet:
5 years of relevant work experience in New Zealand
At least 2 years earning 1.2 times the SMC median wage
Additional Updates
Simplified median wage settings
Clearer qualification requirements for claiming points
Extended validity of English language test results for some applicants
New recognised occupational registration pathway for accountants
Potential option to extend Accredited Employer Work Visas so applicants can complete required skilled work experience for residence.
These changes aim to create more transparent and structured pathways to residence for skilled migrants already contributing to New Zealand’s workforce.
