New Short-Term Graduate Work Visa Opens 16 November 2026
Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is introducing a new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa from Monday 16 November 2026. It gives eligible international graduates 6 months of open work rights, so they can gain New Zealand work experience after finishing a qualification that does not lead to a Post Study Work Visa.
Who can apply
You will need to:
hold a qualification at NZQCF Level 5 to 7 that you studied full-time for at least 24 weeks in New Zealand
make sure the qualification is not an English language, foundation or bridging qualification, and does not make you eligible for a Post Study Work Visa
apply within 3 months of your New Zealand student visa expiring
have at least NZD $5,000 available to support yourself
provide a medical certificate and chest X-ray, depending on how long you have been in New Zealand
not have previously been granted a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa or a Post Study Work Visa
Visa conditions
6 months of open work rights
Any work must be for an employer under an employment agreement or contract for services
Business ownership is not allowed
Only one Short-Term Graduate Work Visa can be granted, and it cannot be extended
Holders cannot support a partner for a work visa or children for a Dependent Child Student Visa
Planning ahead
Timing matters with this visa. If your student visa is due to expire, note the 3-month application window and make sure your funds and medical documents are ready before you apply.
