Parent Resident Visa: New Hybrid Selection Model from 5 October 2026

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) announced on 8 August 2026 that the Parent Resident Visa selection process is changing. From 5 October 2026, a hybrid model will replace the current ballot-only system.

How selection will work

• About 90% of expressions of interest (EOIs) will be selected in date order

• About 10% will be selected through a ballot

• The annual cap of 2,500 Parent Resident Visas each financial year stays the same

If you already have an EOI in the pool

• Your EOI will move into the new system automatically on 5 October 2026, and you will not need to submit a new EOI

• If you have kept a continuous EOI, your original submission date will be kept for your place in the queue

• EOIs will no longer expire after 2 years, as long as you confirm every 2 years that you want to stay in the pool and keep your details up to date

• There is no additional fee to confirm your EOI

Key dates

• 11 August 2026: selection held under the current system

• 5 October 2026: hybrid selection model takes effect

• 10 November 2026: first selection under the new model

The existing eligibility requirements, including sponsorship and income requirements, are not changing. Sponsors should keep their details current and make sure they continue to meet the income requirements.
